Our Story
Boonstra Motorsports isn’t just a business—it’s the continuation of a family tradition that’s been passed down through generations.
Our story begins with our great-grandfather, Dick Boonstra, who owned his own service station many years ago. His knowledge and love of mechanics were passed on to his son, John Boonstra, who developed a passion for working on vehicles as a hobby. Our grandfather became known for buying, restoring, and enjoying old Dodge vehicles before passing them on to the next owner. More importantly, he passed that passion on to his son, Tim Boonstra.
Our dad founded Boonstra Motorsports as a hobby long before it became the business it is today. Saturdays were spent in the family barn with friends, building hot rods, solving problems, and sharing ideas. Over the years, those weekends became known as “Hot Rod School”—a place where knowledge was shared, skills were developed, and a lifelong passion for mechanics was passed down to the next generation. For us, that’s where it all began.
Growing up, our dad would load us into his Dodge Club Cab and we’d spend weekends traveling across Alberta searching for old Dodge trucks. Those trips sparked a passion that has shaped our lives ever since. Before long, we weren’t just tagging along—we were turning wrenches alongside Dad, learning the trade firsthand. We were also fortunate to judge some incredible car shows over the years, including Poweramaand other Edmonton-area events, as well as Mopars at the Strip in Las Vegas.
That passion eventually became our careers.
Jack began his Heavy Duty Mechanic apprenticeship in Grade 12 and earned both his Journeyman and Red Seal certification by the age of 20. I followed a similar path in the Automotive Service Technician trade, earning my Journeyman and Red Seal certification at 21. Together, we’ve combined our professional training with the knowledge that has been passed down through generations of our family.
For years, we continued building and restoring Dodge trucks at Mom and Dad’s place. Then, in 2022, Jack found a property with the shop we’d always dreamed of. As a family, we purchased it together. The building was little more than a shell, but through countless hours of work, we transformed it into the fully equipped shop we’d always envisioned.
Today, Boonstra Motorsports is a full-service automotive shop specializing in classic Dodge trucks, restorations, rust repair, bodywork, maintenance, and custom projects. While our shop has grown, the values haven’t changed. Every vehicle that comes through our doors is treated with the same care, craftsmanship, and pride that began generations ago in a small service station and continued through a family barn filled with hot rods.
For us, this has never just been about fixing vehicles—it’s about preserving history, building quality, and carrying on a family legacy, one project at a time.
I think this reads really well for a website. It feels authentic, tells your family’s story in order, and explains why Boonstra Motorsports is more than just another repair shop.
